UPDATE 4 august 2011:

Alright although I'm not a Muslim, I am pretty interested in this matter.
Simply because I'm practicing my right to critical thinking.
When it comes to sensitive matters like religion in this case, people tend to immediately jump on the band wagon with bon fires and pitch forks ready at an instant.
1st, I went straight to Starbucks...site HERE.

So, there is a logo.
I did some snooping around. And it led me to this site HERE.

Hmm...no date.
What is E471? Is it really contained in the drinks?
Any chemist or food nutritionist to vouch for the origin?
Perhaps it can originate from other sources?
Let's take a look around.

More haramness for your perusal.
I'm not sure of the legitimacy of this site. Anyone care to vouch for it?

My suspicion was further fueled by the Bahasa Malaysia used.
I would assume something this serious would warrant a more careful use of syntax and vocabulary. But then again maybe thats just me?
A few seconds on Google and I managed to track an earlier post.

So this cup of hot coffee has been around for some time.
A few questions comes to mind.
- Is the alleged Halal Guide site legit?
- If so, how did Starbucks get the seal of Halal in the 1st place?
- If it is true, wouldn't there have been a formal address at least 2 years ago?
- If it's not true, then what are the true intentions of this site? Would it count as slander?
- Which came 1st? The chicken or the egg? Wait...wrong post.
Anyone willing to go straight to the horses mouth and call Jakim?
If you do, please let me know how the conversation went.
No more here say there say, speculations and wild fire of a rumour spreading.
I understand that sometimes you share information because you care about someone.
But isn't it better to spread true information?
Like the fact that KFC has a new chicken chop dish for only RM9.90
instead of saying
the nuclear disaster in Japan would cause acid rain here.
Seriously, are acid rain and the nuclear pollution associated?
Can it travel all the way here?
So the next time you hear a shocking piece of info and itching to spread it to someone else,
STOP
Where did this info came from? Is it legit?
P/S: Have you ever spread a piece of information you weren't sure of? I know I have *blush*

Interesting post! Though, I'm confused on what they're talking about cherries in the raspberry frap? Is it the cherry on top?
I too must confess to sharing info before validating it:(
good thought there :)
Wow what a useful information! Love it much! I would never dig into the matter but luckily for me, you did and I read it here :)
Keep it up! sadly, the same 'declaration' will continue to make its rounds.
Additionally, If u go to http://www.halaljakim.gov.my/ > Direktori Halal Malaysia link on the right hand side and search for 'starbucks' you will find halal certs there, just click on the icon to get a listing of the foods that are certified Halal, expiring in at least 2012.
you know what? everytime I go sushi king with my muslim colleagues, I will ask the same question to them. Hey, here no halal sign you know, then point to the small sign on the table stating some food had a percentage of alcohol.
But yet, they eat there, and it's the norm also everywhere you see sushi kings having muslim patrons. So I guess to be halal or not halal actually depends on the individual himself.
you have raised a very valid point and a worrying one indeed!
if the authorities themselves are unclear about the rules, then it can only lead to misinformation and consequences beyond repair...
:D
Or, anyone can just do a simple Google search and find out that the emulsifier in question can be derived from either plant or animal sources (and not only from pigs either). I noticed you did not mention this fact in your post ;)
@amanda103 Thank you ^^ Not too sure my self about the cherry my self but no problems for me^^
@wanUSJ Thanks, just sharing what was on my mind ^^
@Rolling Fumbling Thug lols and you can share now with your friends! ^^
@Abdul Hayy Zulkifli yeah, people need to be educated.
@Abdul Hayy Zulkifli THANKS! <3
@Isaac Tan Really? Am not too sure ^^ but thanks for sharing ^^
@mistarJ I'm not sure if it's the authorities or others taking advantage of the peoples minds.
@k0k s3n w4i I noticed you did not read properly as I DID!
"What is E471? Is it really contained in the drinks?

perhaps not as clearly as you've stated ^^
if the food contains more than 0.01% of alcohol it will be non-halal.. but sushi king only contains 0.01% of alcohol.. it's the same amount of alcohol that u can get from pineapple fruit.. if u don't believe me google about the 0.01% and the pineapple fruit..
Islam is basically a religion based on intention. If a muslim accidentally eats non-halal food without the intention of doing so, that muslim will not be held accountable for it.
Since Starbucks is already listed on the JAKIM site as halal, then there's no more doubt that it is halal.
However, Sushi King doesn't have the halal logo but muslims still eat there. So for sushi king the line between halal and haram is a bit blurry and this is where a person has to use their own judgement. If a muslim is not confident that sushi king is halal that muslim should avoid it. On the other hand, if a muslim is totally convinced that sushi king is halal and has no intention of eating haram food, then it is alright although it is not encouraged. This is because Malaysia is a muslim country where halal food is abundant, therefore it is better for a muslim to choose food which is clearly halal (eg: food from restaurants with the halal logo).
Sorry for the long comment, but yeah good article. It's nice to know that non-muslims care. :D
