Goodbye old year!

Dear 2010,

I'm sorry you had to leave. For the past 12 months you have been a great companion. Sure there were had celebrations and happy sprees but still the differences did exist.

You were there when I got my 1st official job as a assistant brain washer in the beginning and it was with you that I shall remember my father passing away in the end. All the wonderful food that we've ate and the horrendous unhealthy weight I've gained. The continuing of a relationship and the test in discovering each other.

It was with you that I really felt like I've grown up. Learning about banking and finance, planning a real future ahead, how to become a real host at a party. It was with you as well where I meet so many fun, interesting and kind people in real life on Twitter, Nuffnang, and through blogging all whom I hope I will learn and grown together.

The year where I have successfully have 130 posts on Bonjour Glow and finally got my 1st movie screening invite.

And also for finally releasing Star Craft 2.

Thank you 2010 for actually letting me save up a tidy sum of money. I hope 2011 is as generous as you and perhaps there will be some extra left for some awesome time travelling after paying back my study loans.

On the 31st many will be celebrating the coming of 2011 but I will be celebrating 2010. To a great year past. Know that the fireworks are as much to celebrate the great moments we had and the promise of the new year.

Take care now, I know we will never meet again. But know that I will always look back at you fondly. Especially now that I have the archive section set up on the left side of Bonjour Glow.

Love,
Glow~*

The Season of the Witch is Here

I grew up with witches. This is my story.

The 1st witch I ever knew was actually quite healthy. She has a thing for apples.

An apple a day to keep the witch doctor away?

The next witch I grew up knowing was a real Queen.

Can you see the Diva?

Then we have a seafood lover.

You can see where the calories go.

And them we have a little bi polar.
This is a confusing one.

Many more came, in different shapes
Sizes

Ages

Male pattern baldness

Colour

Not all are bad. Just the few.

And of the few I am terribly afraid of them.

The curses and potions? I'm not so worried,

There seems to be an antidote for everything these days.

The devious plots? Well I have noticed that many witches have this insatiable thirst for youth. But I'm not too worried as I'll point them to the directions of either the beauty salon or a more fitting candidate.

Epitomy of youth. Go get HER!

Well I am sort of a private person so it is quite disturbing knowing that they could be peeping in to my life at this very instant...while I'm typing this. Creepy...

Me taking a stroll with my best buddies.

Now you know I value my privacy dearly. I'm a person who enjoys me piece and quite relaxing with a good spell book and wolfberry tea.

The one thing that I am utmost fearful of,

the thing that sends shivers down my spine,
goosebumps on my epidermis,
cold sweats streaming through my pores,
hair follicles on ends
and me potentially pee in my bed is...
*take a deep breath for this one*

the
disorderly
earsplitting
deafening
piercing
rowdy
racket
pandemonium sound that emits when they find

Yup, I can't stand their laughter. The moment I hear a cackle my fright fight or flight response in immediately activated. I usually choose the latter.

I am a sensitive person when it comes to sound so I can say that one can drive me bonkers with a witches cry.

Someone pass her a Dequadine!

And it seems that the seasons of the witches is coming so I think I better run and hide.

Season of the witch
I shall hide with ear muffs handy while or hero fights them off.

If only there was somewhere peaceful and relaxing I can run too...hmm...how bout

Keeping paparazzi and witches at bay.

Not only is Penang Hard Rock Hotel a peaceful place, the rocking live music and soothing soulful sounds of The Jazzhats will be sure to distract me from the buzzing witches.

In fact if they would stop with the cackling, I might just get them a round of drinks to unwind and some cough syrup too.

Christmas 2010

I love Christmas. Even though I usually get conned in the Present Department. You see, my birthday falls on Christmas eve's eve, 23rd of December to be exact. When ever I do get presents the joke has always been that it was so close to Christmas, it's a 2 in 1 present. That is 1 present for 2 occasions. "Ha...ha..." I managed a half hearted smile. But then again I do not mind the lack of presents. What's important is the people I'm with.

23rd of Dec 2010
My 1st adult dinner/birthday party. 20 pax of few family, friends, acquaintances and the VVIP BOSSES of Ben and mine. It was an odd evening for me as I broke out of my little girl mold to try to make conversations among the guests. I have always admired people whom can talk their way into and out of anything.

The real pulse of the party without being the center of attention, people like Nigella Lawson. Of course I am no hostess and certainly without the mostes, still the evening went rather smoothly as some guest from different worlds converged to make kind conversations. I wonder is there a course or a Book for Dummies regarding hosting? Or social Etiqutte. If there is LET ME KNOW!

24th Dec 2010
Christmas/Belated birthday dinner with the family at Golden Triangle, Juru Auto City. Managed to catch a glimpse of a Taiwanese singer called Hebe. Don't think she's 1/3 of the SHE group but then again I wouldn't know any better.

25th Dec 2010
Christmas for me started off with a surprise. Well on our way to Penang, Ben decided that we'll stay a night here, in a small hotel. It was a sweet gesture,as the demon inside of me screamed "WHAT? What about clothes? toiletries? Clean Change of clothes? make-up remover? MAKE-UP FOR THE NEXT DAY!"

Tonnes of things were in my head and I had to let slip a few of them to him. "It's alright, we'll just grab something a long the way." I must admit, I do envy his ability to be so random, but sometimes I feel like it borders to a smug disregard for the sanctity of preparations. Here I am consciously learning to be a more organised person and there he goes, pulling a fast one on me.

Perhaps my panties have been in a bunch for too long and he felt I/WE needed a break? Yes, I shall stick to that reasoning, least my sanity snaps.

So we pulled over for lunch at this quaint little restaurant called Little Cottage Cafe.

Here are some food snaps.

Buffet style Christmas food.

Pudding and Kisses.

Now if you know this place, on the way to the Botanical Gardens and Persiaran Gurney. Also at that corner was the again quaint little hotel which we stayed in.

The Waterfall Hotel.

It was indeed quaint. Clean with a bath tub, selected Astro channels and an inoperatable Wi-Fi and no view at all but, the bath tub saved the day^^ Imagine after a looooong day of shopping and just soaking your tired aching body into a hot tub of relaxing water ofuro style....gosh I miss it already.

I digress.

So depite the sudden surge of cars on the roads of Penang we forged ahead to Gurney Plaza, our favorite haunt. Read here about the lurking dangers there especially for young kids. Got our hands on a lovely Braun Buffel wallet for a friend. Shared with other friends of course.

Why Braun Buffel? The simple fact that they offer great quality leather, fantastic service and you can just pop into any branch and ask them to polish up your wallet FOC anytime. Talk about shinning service.

Ben got me a gift as well. A glowing new pair of earings.

I've been hinting that I need a pair for quite a while now. I am unfortunately high maintenance, not by choice but by genetics. My skin is allergic to many kinds of metals except gold.

Even plated will not do as my ear lobes will proceed to be inflamed, swell, turn into a blushing red colour and puss will procedd to ooze out. All this in a mere 4 hours. And well the last pair I owned for everydday use had to be decomisioned due to ahem...my carelessnes. But let's not get into that.

After galavanting in Gurney off we went to the new happening place, Straits Quay. It was indeed beautifully white, and the resemblance in architecture to E&O is no mere coincidence as they are under the same corporation.
Cant wait for the theater to open there. Read here for my acting days in KL PAC.

But sadly there are not many shops there yet so away we go, to Queensbay Mall! But before that, a stop over for dinner. Another quaint restaurant we found.

62, Cantoment Road (Jalan Pemenang) near Gurney Drive, Penang.

Omelette appetizer.

Potato salad.

Cold soba. Cute quail egg. Yeah, it's raw.

Yummy chunky salmon belly.

NATO! good quality too.

Scallops.

At Queensbay Mall we managed to get a Chirstmas present for Ben to complete his set, for now. A present that is worthy of it's own post so stay tuned. We had to also get our toothbrush, tooth paste, shower gel, make-up remover, facial cleanser and...Luckily we managed to get all in miniature sizes at Watsons! As for our PJs, lukily there was a FOS sale going on so we scrunged for 3 Ts for RM23. Don't you just love sales?

Headed back to the hotel for a long pruning process in the tub.

That it for our Christmas for 2010. Surprises, marathons, patience, food and love.

P/S: Santa left me a gift! I dreamt of my dad who passed away on the 4th of Dec 2010. *Dream mode* Ben and I were going to church when I saw him from behind wearing the blue shirt which he likes. Then I had to go on stage and I saw him, smilling and waiving at me. I couln't hear what he said but something about being happy in heaven. Perhaps it's my over active imaginations or my longing for my dad, either way I choose to take this as a good omen. Merry Christmas Ah Pa.

Merri Kurismasu!~

It was the night before Christmas,
And all through the house,
Not a creature was stirring.
Not even a mouse.
Well except for Ben being on his PS3 blasting Enslave. Yeah the journey to the West Monkey God adaptation.

prayers to all, Merry Christmast to all.

Inventing My Own iPad Application for Maxis

Does this sound familiar to you?

A:What day is it today?

B:Wait, let me check my handphone... It's *insert date*

I realise this is the wrong month

A:Isn’t Thaipusam next week? HOLIDAY!

Another scenario which happened to me just recently.

Tomorow Dong Zhi? or isit next week?

*Scrambles for ever reliable calender*

Ah?! It was yesterday? o.O"
sobs, yes I missed it

___________________________________________________________________

Dear readers,

I come to you with a simple idea. Something which I find relates to me, as a holiday loving Malaysian.

We have on average 17 public holidays a year, and that's excluding regional holidays.

Sometimes different states declare their own holidays. Mostly revolving around our respective Sultans' (Royalty) birthdays. It get's a little confusing at times.

You see, the typical calendar found in most handphone/smartphone/computer/ipad can't cut it for me.

Remember these:
Ye ol' Reliable

Use to love tearing there out every morning to start the day.

Nostalgic and simple yet pack full with information.

We depends on the calender everyday, not only to tell what day it is but also to plan ahead our lives.

In Malaysia, a country celebrating a myriad of cultures, the Chinese and Muslim calenders are still widely refered to.

Just one scan and you can determine visually when the Golden holiday's start or ends. Does it apply to your state?

Another scenario
C: Oh that guy? He's born on the year of the rat.

D: Wait let me check the calender.
No way he's only 26?

I personally use the nifty zodiac reference quite often to determine peoples age.

You see, the current calendar apps are nice and well but it would be so much better if we Malaysianaise it.

Inject it with our own flavor and character.

Infusing the Chinese and Muslim calender with the western

Introducing...

  3. Get a clear picture of month ahead with just one look. Best for those booking holidays on their iPad with the crazy prices of air flight tickets, EVERYONE CAN FLY!
  4. In fact you can use it to set your own appointments and even declare your own holidays!
How awesomely ol' school is that?

Ms. Night

TIGER, tiger, burning bright
In the forests of the night,
What immortal hand or eye
Could frame thy fearful symmetry?

William Blake. 1757–1827

Alright, so we're not talking about a tiger but more about Ms. Midnight here

She's young and perhaps from lots of tumbling around, her coat is not as shiny and full as it could be.
But ever friendly, I met her after a mamak (supper) session at night. I didn't notice her at 1st as she was well camouflaged. Thanks to her playful mews and "manja" demeanor, I stuck around and played with her awhile.
Sometimes we need to make time for others.

A Father Passing

Apologies to all darling readers for inactivity in Bonjour Glow for the past few weeks. To those of you whom are following me on Twitter, you might already know of the reason behind my disappearance.

"Thank you for coming" I said, shaking the hand of many kind people. The last time I have touched the hands of so many, uttering these very words was my union with Ben a little under a year ago. But this time it was in a completely different tone. A wise mouse squeaked to me that families gather together in a few occasions, celebrations of unions, new born and in this case a funeral.

On the 4th of Dec 2010, God had decided that he needed my father up in Heaven more then we needed him here. Yes that is the reasoning I’m sticking too. We know not for sure but such is faith, and such is comfort…for the living at least.

After 10 years of surviving with Parkinson's, his health took a turn for worse. Sensing that his time was near after a bad episode, he was put in a home for my mother, alone with high blood pressure, could not care for him. Please do not judge us for this decision. It was a difficult choice to make.

His condition grew better as he gained back his strength, often seen exercising at the front porch of the home. Then, one last cue, Dad had high fever and was hospitalized. It came very swiftly, perhaps it is better then a long drawn out suffering, the eternal optimist in me chimed. Morbid.

By the time he drew his last breath alone at 5.30 am on that fateful Saturday morning, he had already made peace with all his children even his last wishes on how he wanted his body to be handled was shared. At that time, my brothers brushed it off as an inauspicious thing to say. Preferring dad to recover his strength and continue his advice another day at home.

It’s very typical of families especially Chinese not to mention about death but I guess my dad knew what was coming and wanted to ease our mind in at least a few aspects after. This time, being auspicious didn’t count.

The weekend was a blur to me. Fortunately this daddy’s girl has 3 elder brothers and kind relatives to make sense of the whole flurry. A simple Christian burial was arranged at a funeral parlor and a plot was chosen to be his final resting place. All taken care off by lunch time with relative ease.

A pastor from the church he was baptizes in many years ago, St. Mark’s Church tucked away behind my Alma Mater, conducted the funeral for 2 days. As kind souls came to pay their last respect to a relative, a teacher, a friend.

It was easy to keep busy tending to visitors and seeing to the little responsibilities, consciously telling yourself to make it go as smoothly as possible. Everything must be perfect.

But there were quiet moments, especially in the early mornings and late nights when not many people were around, as I said my good mornings, good nights, prayer and final words to my dad’s physical body laying in his coffin.

A flurry of emotions would weld up inside of me as the flood gates of tears were released. I’ve been known to be a cry baby. You see, I prefer to see my self being gifted with overwhelming sense of empathy. Yet, I know that this is a rite I have to enter and immerse myself in and to resurface once more.

Condolences started coming in from family and friends. Even those talented people whom I have not been lucky enough to meet in real life like Shah, Ohmywtf and Specter from the blog/twittersphere were kind enough share in a few moments the loss we we’re going through.

There was also controversy afoot as one of my brothers was away on a business trip in the US. My mother did not want him to know about dad’s passing, unsure of how he may take the news so far away. But he knew because of a little blue birdie.

Deep down inside we all knew this day would come. It was just a matter of time. The moment we are born we are already dying. But not many people would actually envision how it will go, how we will pass.

I now continue on with my daily life. It’s easier to not be affected when you are so far away. No physical reminder. No empty chair in the living room, extra tooth brush in the bathroom, bare bed where I am at. No anti-matter.

However, I do dread the moment that I may hypothetically absentmindedly utter “I wonder if Ah Pa’s medical appointment is due?” only to be stifled by the fact that he has no more appointments left in the living world. I cannot imagine what my mom is going through finding that book of his tucked under the many weeks later. Hypothetically speaking.

Calls and visits are made more frequently to touch base with her; encouragements to go for trips to relax the mind are said. Therapeutic advices such as “move on, stay strong” are peppered in every conversation.

My limited grasp of Hakka and Cantonese restricts all that I wish to convey in hopes to make my mom feel better and relieve her of her worries. One thing that I am glad I had started doing before my dad passing was to rid my self of the whole norm of physical bashfulness in my house and actually embrace my parents.

Yes, after many years of physical shyness I’ve started hugging my parents again. Awkward at first and still is but no regrets. Sometimes a hug can be so simple and yet prevailing. More comforting then a thousand eloquent words.

I managed to hug my dad a few more times before his passing. And I shall continue practicing on my mom.

I hope I have not turned your day too somber. If you have read the whole passage, I thank you deeply for taking the time in sharing a moment with me. If not, I still thank you for dropping by and contributing to my visitor count.

P/S: So have you hugged a loved one today? A sincere innocent simple hug?Alright, how bout a smile then?

PP/S: 23rd of Dec is my birthday and 25th is Christmas. My 1st without my dad =(

Seremban Part 2: Not actually in Seremban

This post mostly took place in Kuala Lumpur, Kelana Jaya and Subang. In fact none of it was in Seremban.

So day 2 was for revisiting our old haunts. 1st up, can you guess where this is?

Awaiting for food.

The condiments.

The appetizers...

And now the main course.

It's a really famous wantan noodle shop in Sungei Wang.

Now when in KL it's best to rely on the public transport as with out a GPS/map and on a weekday the chances of you getting roasted in your car due to long exposure of getting lost is highly probably.

So we ditched our car at a designated and sadly highly overpriced parking lot and headed on foot to our next destination. Interesting sights along the way...

o.O"

So despite so bad directions and thanks to some good samaritans we managed to find our way to Kamal.

The Holy Mekah of book stores for all your medical related books. Yes, we came all the way from Penang for this and it was well worth the trip. Book stores in Penang tend to carry limited books and when they do have it, don't be fooled by the 'best price' sign. Many are about rm50-150 over priced. I guess what the sign really meant was best price for them.

The workers in Kamal are amazing. Mention any title or author and they can pin point immediately where it is and if it's in stock. My theory is that they either only hire people with photographic memories or they are aspiring/failed medical students but still want to be in the medical field.

Alright, now for some food.

Yes, he is very pleased. FATTY CRAB! P/S: can anyone get their hands on a Fatty Crab T shirt for Ben? I think he would love it. Especially if it came with a packet of crabs and their sauce.

Lucky for us we got really fresh crabs that day but the heavenly sauce was a little too spicy that day.

Met up with a good friend. Thanks Luco for the meet ant the PS3 game swap.

Alright fast forward to the next day

Yes we do love our books. Someday we'll have a beautiful library in our home. Oh, this is the new mall near TTDI, Tropicana City Mall. A little small compared to most malls in Klang Valley region but decent non the less.

Notice I have the same jaw line as Chau Sing Chee?

Personally I think Malaysian developers should expand their portfolio to build something other then another mall.

Who doesn't love a ninja?

Interesting shapes and cool marketing.

The ninjas must have been small and not so picky eaters.

The burger was alright. Nothing beats a Ramli I guess.

Next up, DINNER!
A place recommended by Danny Foo, Louisiana
in Malaysia of course.

A contraption

for escargot. Love the consistency and cheesy taste here.

Sea food Gumbo. Cheesy of course, real rustic too.

Huge burgers, by my standard that is.

Look my burger is HAPPY!

Little lamb for the Hawkstah.

And a pounded chicken with lovely spices~

It's so nice to be able to meet these fantastic people. Fellow fun loving food eating chattering people.

Alright, one more day then we're done with this post.

Our final day before we fly back to Penang.

Ben hogging the Settlers of Catan game on my mobile phone at KL Sentral.

I loved taking the train here back to Seremban back when I was in University Malaya. The hustling and bustling of people going places, meeting people. I always feel as if I was at the airport as I briskly walked to catch my connecting train.

This time we had to visit Empire Gallary before leaving.

Recommended by our dear friend Jojo, a noodle place. Sorry forgot the name.

Mee Jawa.

Always good to wash down with soya bean milk.

Lam Mee was delish! And huge too.

Love the crusty bits at the bottom and the lap cheong!

Walked around for a bit with ice-creams. Ben drooped a piece of his chocolate ice-cream, about the size of a thumb drive. As he went off to wash his hands of the residue, Jojo and I was admiring how the small piece of ice-cream looked remarkably like...well a piece of shit. It even managed to stop some passerby to consciously take note of the floor and maneuver around our fallen treat.

Managed to buy out the last bits of macaroons from Whisk for Ben's Boss back in Penang. It was my 1st time trying it and I must saw that they are absolutely yummy pieces of heaven. Shall try making some in the near future, once I find the right recipe, time and test subjects.

Lastly,

Thanks to Jojo for sending us to Subang Air port to catch our flight. And hope to see all you lovely people again soon!~
